Breaking the stigma

Today’s #OneGoodThing was a good session with my therapist, who I’ve been seeing since before I started writing about #OneGoodThing every day.

I’ve never openly talked about mental health on my blog before, though it is a driving force behind why I write it. I’ve struggled with depression and severe anxiety for as long as I can remember. I have panic attacks, flashbacks, and nightmares. But with the help of my compassionate and skilled therapist, a lot of hard work and self care, and writing this blog focusing on what IS good in the day, I pulled myself out of of the depths of depression.

Therapy has made me be a better communicator and more empathetic, which helps me be a better caregiver to Mama. I’m also a happier person, despite my own physical health challenges and the stress of being a solo caregiver.

I never shared this before because I felt silenced by the stigma. But there is no shame in seeking help or taking medication. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I was inspired to share by my fashionable and fabulous friend Jesica, who opened up about her own mental health struggles on her blog, Ryzenberg On, recently.

By raising awareness and candidly sharing our struggles, I hope we will lift the judgement and shame that so many feel. Today’s #OneGoodThing is breaking the silence and ending the stigma.
