Tonight began the High Holiday of Rosh Hashana — the Jewish New Year!
My Facebook feed has been filled with New Years wishes, songs, art and variations of apples with honey (traditionally eaten for a sweet new year)!
We had planned to attend local services this evening with friends, but I came down with a terrible cold yesterday and so we stayed home to avoid spreading it around. Instead, we participated in services online — Central Synagogue in New York City provided a live-stream of tonight’s services and even welcomed those of us watching from around the world. It was so wonderful to hear the shofar and to join this community in prayer tonight. The rabbi gave a powerful, meaningful sermon on welcoming the stranger in our lives.
Today’s #OneGoodThing was welcoming the new year with Jews from around the world! I wish everyone a Shana Tova U’Metukah, which means a good and sweet new year!
Day 276 of 366.
As a bonus, here are my three favorite Shana Tova videos I’ve seen today:
- Happy New Year from President Obama
- 92nd Street Y — Cantors & Communities Around The World Celebrate 5777 in Song
- Rosh Hashana explained by Mayim Bialik and a few friends
