More Family is Always A Good Thing

Nosy Parker and Lisa

Today’s #OneGoodThing is our newest adopted family of the heart. And it all started because I wanted a biscuit.

One Friday morning last summer, the Nosy Parker family schlepped to the DMV, which is pretty much guaranteed to be a frustrating process. When it was over, we thought we’d treat ourselves to a little brunch.

I’d been reading a book set in the South and the main character baked biscuits every day. So, of course, I had to have a biscuit. I turned to Yelp and found a random local diner with biscuits on the menu, and off we went!

Nana Fran and Mama

We just happened to sit in a corner next to a couple of regulars, Nana Fran and her granddaughter Lisa, each of whom have led fascinating lives. The two women immediately fell in love with our sweet little Abby, and we all continued to talk throughout the meal. We discovered that we have a lot of interests in common and all really enjoyed the company. Nana Fran told us all about how her late husband had built the restaurant we were sitting in decades before, and the decorations were taken from her own collection. Lisa and I also bonded in our roles as caregivers for loved ones. We didn’t exchange numbers that first day, and all regretted it, hoping we’d see each other again.

IMG_2298We were all so thrilled to run into each other again a few weeks later that we sat together. Since then, we’ve regularly shared meals together and had a great time. We even got to introduce them to Chanukah, and we made them the first-ever Abby calendar! Today we had a wonderful visit with them and feel so honored to consider them part of our adopted family. Friends are the family you choose, and I’m so grateful we met these wonderful women!
