Twenty years ago today, my beloved grandmother Mema passed away.
We were very close and used to spend long summer days together at the swimming pool in her mobile home complex, only coming inside to eat and continue our ongoing double solitaire match. I loved spending time with her and snuggling against her. I was 14 years old when she died suddenly and unexpectedly, and I was devastated.
I’ve thought about Mema every day since — the moments we shared together and the lessons she taught me. I wear her locket to keep her with me and close to my heart. I’ve followed random strange women around a store because they were wearing her perfume. Still to this day, a single whiff of Estée Lauder Youth Dew can bring tears to my eyes.
Today’s #OneGoodThing is remembering my beloved Mema.
Day 147 of 366.

How wonderful to have someone like that in your life, even though for a short time.

I grew up with your Mema. She was like a second mother to me. When I stayed with Jude’s family in the summer, Henriette was always so nice to me. Her memory is a blessing.
