A Love Affair with Gelato

My Mint Lovers Combo

Don’t get me wrong, I’m already a big ice cream fan. Ben and Jerry are two of my best friends, and I’ll happily share my my favorite ice cream shop (or frozen yogurt or gelato) in every city in which I’ve lived. But NOTHING compares to Italian gelato in Italy. Seriously. Nothing. I literally stand there enjoying and thinking how I can possibly describe to you how amazing it is. I’m not sure mere words can do it justice, but I’ll certainly try.

Now I’m a lifelong mint chip obsessive. Really. Mama Jude craved it when she was pregnant with me and I’ve not been able to get enough since. (And yeah, I’ve been on a diet since I was about 12… ah well, no wonder). Calories don’t count while traveling though, right? Just like they didn’t count during final exams? Anyway, I walk enough here that it seems to be evening out ok.

So of course, if there’s a mint flavor of any kind, I’ll try it. And all gelato here is not the same. Beware. Do not bother buying gelato from one of those horrid little places that just has a window onto the street and is full of chemicals… it tastes like it! Our top favorite in Venice is called Suso and they have TWO mint flavors! One is called Choco-Menta and it a delicious and fresh traditional mint chocolate chip; the other is called Choco-Fresh and it is more chocolately, plus it has coconut (which is not even usually my thing), but it is AMAZING — plus it has chocolate bits on top which end up giving a bit of chocolate crunch surprise as you go along. They aren’t big on tasting here so I can’t even tell you what many of the other flavors taste like. I usually try to beg for one sample before ordering my mint lovers combo so I can tell you that the other flavors were equally mind-blowing.

Suso Flavors

Grom is a very close second to Suso (but much easier to find since it’s on a main walking street). I got lucky as Grom’s current flavor of the month is none other than Mint Chip and it is wonderful! Grom doesn’t use any chemicals or additives of any kind and you can truly taste the difference. Grom’s sorbet flavors are especially delightful and fresh. Apparently Grom has opened a shop in Malibu, CA and in New York City, so if you’re in those areas, join me for a gelato and let me know what you think!

Stay tuned for gelato from Verona, Italy as well!

  1. I’m sorry to say that I’m not a big mint chocolate fan. But I’ve been branching out lately and my tastes are shifting. I rarely get gelato in the US because I know most of the shops use the (chemical) mixes. I hope Grom comes to SF one of these days!

    • Julie, there is some truly fantastic gelato in San Francisco. It is across the street from my old apartment, so of course I was a regular 🙂
It is in the Inner Sunset on 9th Ave between Irving and Judah. The name escapes me now, but it is closer to the top of the street and on the opposite side from Arizmendi. They do a wonderful pumpkin flavor each fall that is almost better than pumpkin pie itself!
