New treatment, new hope

Today was a big day — one I’d been both dreading and anticipating since it was scheduled more than three weeks ago. I started a new IV infusion treatment for my Crohn’s Disease. And I admit, I was scared — of all of it.

I researched what it would be like, what to expect and what to bring. So I was as prepared as possible. But even on a good day, I’ve got shitty veins that collapse when poked with needles. And since I was dehydrated after my miserable day yesterday, I was especially worried.

Luckily, the nurse only had one painful false start and was able to find a good vein on the second try. But best of all, I managed not to have some terrible reaction to the medication! This is nothing short of a miracle, given my body’s terrible reactions to medications in the past.

I’ll have to be extra careful now, the nurse warned me, because today’s treatment will wipe out my immune system and I’ll be extra susceptible. And it’ll take a few weeks and another round of IV treatment before we know if this new medication is working to control my Crohn’s. If it does, I’ll get to taper off of the 40 or so pills I have to take each day. That would be awesome, especially since they don’t work very well anyway and often get caught in my throat.

So I’m very hopeful for my new treatment — and that’s today’s #OneGoodThing!

Day 221 of 365. And Day 587 in a row!
