Mama and I took a long, slow walk across Venice today. We started at our apartment in Castello, walked nearly to the Rialto Bridge, then circled back to San Marco, and finally home again.
We scrapped our original plans for today, because we had a few enjoyable errands to run around the city. We went to a colorful scarf shop we’d seen before, so Mama could pick out a pashmina for her birthday.
While we were at the bookstore with the gondola recently, we spotted an adorable Boston Terrier ring in the window. It turned out to be the exact ring in a newspaper ad that we cut out and stuck onto our fridge two years ago. The ring is even more gorgeous in person, and Mama decided she was getting this wearable art for me as a thank you for my hard work organizing this trip. I adore it, and I can hardly believe it’s now on my finger!
We met lovely people throughout the day — incredibly kind shopkeepers, friendly travelers, and helpful strangers. It’s a challenge to get across the many bridges/stairs in Venice with Mama’s rollator walker, and we are immensely grateful when random people appear and offer assistance.
As we slowly made our way home, Mama and I enjoyed the stunning views walking through Piazza San Marco at sunset. The architecture was highlighted majestically by the colorful sky. It’s a view we hope to see again before we return to California.
Once back in our neighborhood, we picked up a pizza for dinner at our old favorite spot — and happened to meet the woman currently renting our apartment from five years ago! She was very sweet and told us about her son living in San Francisco, just an hour away from us! What a small world!
At one point today, we found ourselves walking through a movie set in Campo Santa Maria Formosa. Apparently, this guy in the glasses (left side of the collage) is rumored be the star of Spiderman.
Today’s #OneGoodThing was finding ourselves in San Marco at sunset! Our feet are sore, but thankfully, we still have peppermint/arnica foot cream left from our fun time at LUSH!
Day 276 of 365. And Day 1,007 in a row (here’s the first 366 & the following 365)!
1 year ago today: 13 fewer pills to swallow
2 years ago today: Breathtaking essence of Venice
