No vision damage

Today was a new medical first for me. I saw my first opthalmologist to check if my severe shingles outbreak damaged my vision. Despite the ongoing pain at the back of my right eyeball, there is no damage! Hooray!

But if you thought shingles was just a rash, let me disabuse you of that notion. Yes, there’s an awful rash spread across the right side of my head, neck, and chest and it feels like my skin is on fire 24/7. But the worst of it is actually the nerve pain. Nothing seems to help this kind of pain, except revolving ice packs.

This collage of photos is my shingles rash at its worst when I was first hospitalized. Please let this be your PSA. If you can get the shingles vaccine, do it! I didn’t qualify for it because I’m 42 and it isn’t given until age 50. But being immunocompromised has greatly affected my shingles outbreak and I am still struggling more than two weeks after it began.

Today’s #OneGoodThing is no vision damage from shingles! And thanks to my sisterbestie Alyssa for the get well card! What was your #OneGoodThing today? Please share in the comments! And remember, kindness is everything!

  1. Wow, they were right when they said this is the worst case of shingles they have seen. The ones I have seen were nowhere near as bad, and the patients had very severe pain.

    • The pain has been excruciating since the very beginning when the rash was not nearly as bad and the pain has only gotten worse. Only ice packs help.
